Old Photos of Witham

1955 Carnival procession, with Dan Crittall’s traction engine

Photographer: Edith or Gerry Willsher, Taken: 18 June 1955, Source: Willsher, Edith and Gerry, Ref: M1755

1955 Carnival procession with the George (36 Newland Street) on the right, with 2 Collingwood Road and Moy’s coal place at about 4 Collingwood Road behind. Small bit of Glover’s garage (38 Newland Street) on left. Looking up Collingwood Road. Shows a ‘Burrell’ traction engine (with sign saying ‘British Legion’) (reg no. AH 5305). It is probably the one made in 1909 belonging to Dan Crittall of Silver End, and driven by him. Also a Carnival queen in a car, but not the Witham one, by comparison with newspaper etc. Might be Braintree Winter Queen, Miss Maureen Hanlon. Behind is lorry, probably with children’s fancy dress entrants on it.
