Certificate awarded to Moses Brown for thatching on 9 October 1856. This was during a gathering of the Witham Labourers’ Friend and Agricultural Society.
Moses was recommended by Mr T Smith of Wickham. There was a Moses Brown aged 31, agricultural labourer, born and living in Wickham Bishops, with wife and 7-year old son, in the 1861 census (RG 9/1107, f.121, p.1).
The certificate was signed by Lord Rayleigh (president), Jonathan Hutley and Rev John Bramston (committee), William Hutley and Edward Smith (secretaries). The prize was £1 10s. The event took place at Olivers farm, Witham. See the Chelmsford Chronicle, 17 October 1856.
The original certificate is in colour, but at the time Mrs Brunner kindly lent it for copying, in 1983, to copy something this size in colour was not easily undertaken.
