Photos of Witham

Chipping Hill from by the Albert, with man by gate and women with pram

Taken: 1908 or before, Source: Hazel Fisher, Ref: M864

‘Chipping Hill Witham’. View west from near railway bridge. Field left foreground. On left, probably ‘Earlsmead’, Chipping Hill (built 1899, from Witham building plans no.110). Centre, tower of parish church. Right of centre, 10 Chipping Hill and 12 Chipping Hill. On right behind trees, 8 Chipping Hill (Temples). Man by gate probably Charles Fisher, i.e. ‘father’ in the message. Also ladies and pram. Address on back ‘Mrs A Fisher, 30 Brighton Avenue, Southchurch, Southend on Sea’. Message ‘I have sent father to visit you. It is just like him isin’t it hoping you are both quite well with love xxxxxxx’. There are many other versions of this view with people standing in the same spot as the man on this one. Possibly it was popular to have oneself included in it.
