Old Photos of Witham

Chipping mill

Taken: 1870-81, Ref: M2397

The old Chipping Hill mill (now 1 Powershall End). It burnt down in 1881. The newspaper feature quotes Mr T Springett, who appears on the photo; he would be Thomas Springett, born 1858 (he’d actually be about 83 at the time of the article though the newspaper says 74). In the 1970s Thomas’s son and daughter were said to have a copy of the photo at their house opposite, but I have never traced it.
