Clearing shell cases from maltings

Taken: 1920-23, Source: Thompson, Ken. 40 Guithavon Road, Witham, CM8 1HD His mother and Charles Smith's wife Ann were sisters (born Skingsleys). It was probably after Ada Smith died that he was given the photos., Ref: M2195

Back of photo has handwritten inscription ‘Clearing shell cases from Maltings 1920-23 (the last digit is written almost like an 0 with the left side missing, but looks like the 3 on the back of M2196). The names are written on the back, as left to right, as ‘Bert Colman, —, F A Smith, —, —, John Youngs’. F A Smith, the only woman in the group, was Florence Ada Smith of Chalks Road, known as Ada Smith, to whom the photo probably belonged. The maltings will be the station maltings in Station Road, as there are railway lines and a railway truck.
