Freemasons’ dinner, large group. Perhaps the Witham Lodge. Said to include (1) Captain Evitt of Witham Lodge, (2) Inspector Giggins of Witham, or Inspector Chapman, (3) David Maidment (?) teacher and councillor of Witham, (10) Cecil Dudley of Crittall’s office, (16) — Playle (?) electrical engineer in Thompson’s yard, Braintree Road, (57) policeman?, (58) George Carton (had restaurant in Witham), (63) said to be James Croxall, retired manager of gas works, but he died in 1949, (64) Arthur Mallows (from Chelmsford, St John’s Road, Police Inspector in Chelmsford) (69) Police Sergeant Joslin of Witham, lived in Hatfield Road, (70) George Thompson, coal merchant, of Witham (he was in the Witham, Hatfield Peverel and Tollesbury lodges), (75) — Campion?, lived in Cressing Road, friend of Cecil Dudley, (96) — Chapman, police inspector of Witham, (99) Reverend Payne of Witham?, (107) Geoff Brown (of Morning Star, Witham), (111) Tom Bradshaw, lived in Collingwood Road, (115) — Furlong, lived in Avenue Road, father of John Furlong, (116) Dick (Budgie) Ashby, motor repairs in Hatfield Road, (124) — Burgess (?), had flat opposite Spread Eagle, (125) Walter Care, head at Maldon Road school till 1951.
