Joseph Smith, builder (c 1839-1919), his grandson Leslie Smith (c 1895-1954), and Joseph Ernest Smith (Ernest, Joseph’s son and Leslie’s father) (c 1869-1933). Joseph came to Moat farm, Witham, 1870s, later of Temples, Chipping Hill, and Earlsmead, Chipping Hill. Building and joinery works in Chipping Hill, responsible for much Witham building c. 1880 onwards. Joseph Ernest his son joined in the business but eventually more of a farmer, at Moat farm and at Moulsham Hall farm. Leslie trained as an architect but became a farmer also, incuding at Whiteheads, Witham.
