Loveday’s butchers shop, 58 Newland Street, with new van

Photographer: Ford Motor Company, Taken: 1938 approx, Source: David (Bud) Smith, Ref: M725

Loveday’s butchers shop, 58 Newland Street, with new van. Taken by Fords as an advert; stamped on back is ‘FORD MOTOR COMPANY LTD. NO FEE OR ACKNOWLEDGEMENT NECESSARY. DAGENHAM, ESSEX’. Frank William Smith (Bud’s father) is in the doorway, and Bill Fenner is in the van. The shop had been a butcher’s since the 1850s, first Barwells, then Goodchilds, and then Lovedays, who were here till about 1970. The slaughterhouse at the back always intrigued pupils from the adjoining National Schools
