Old photo of soldiers during First World War. Some are Royal Medical Corps (information from Ian Hook, Essex Regiment Museum), with some civilians. With felled tree at south end of Avenue Road, looking south. On left is the Catholic church, now (2000) a house, and behind are the Grove Cottages, Newland Street.
