River Brain in front, Vicarage meadow behind with cows, St Nicholas church just visible behind trees. Caption says ‘A Pretty corner, Chipping Hill, Witham’. Postmark is 6 June 1916. Addressed to Mrs Marshall, c/o Mrs Bacon, 22 Childerditch St., nr Brentwood.Message reads ‘The Rifle Range Camp, Witham. Couldn’t write before dear, we have to walk 4 miles to post, & after lying on the wet range all day you can just imagine what we are like, can’t you dear. Love to all of you. Yours as ever Brenchley[?]’. Rifle Range, up Poershall End, was for practising during the First World War.
