Sidney Valentine as Boy Scout

Photographer: W E Bull, Witham and Braintree ?, Taken: 1910-1914, Source: West, Peter, Ref: M1680

Sidney Valentine in Boy Scout’s uniform. Probably same as Corporal Herbert Sidney Valentine, 20th Battalion, Middlesex Regiment, who died in First World War on 24th November 1917. G/51171. On Witham War Memorial and on Cambrai Memorial, Louverval, Nord, France (addenda panel). Had appeared at Tribunal in March 1916, said to be ‘a young draper’s assistant’, had two brothers, one now in reserved occupation, he was willing to go. Perhaps the Sidney born in Witham c.1897, son of William (a horseman) and Elizabeth (1901 census, RG 13/1725, f.81, p.16, schedule 100, Guithavon Valley). Doesn’t have photographer’s name on it (W E Bull), but photo M1681 does, and it has the same back otherwise, and same appearance of Sidney. W E Bull doesn’t appear as a photographer in the directories till 1914, though he lived in Witham earlier.
