First World War soldiers in field between Avenue Road and the Avenue. Probably Army Service Corps. Farrier Sergeant on right (information from Ian Hook, Essex Regiment Museum). George Shelley, blacksmith, of Newland Street, shoeing horses. The soldier on the left was billeted with the Godfrey family in Bridge Street. Probably part of Cooper Taber’s seed warehouse (Avenue Road and Station Road) in background.
