Notes on Mrs Gladys Baker

Residences
First on west side of Maldon Road, south of what is now number 4, at saddler and harness maker’s shop with parents.
Next on east side of Maldon Road at what is now number 25, saddler and harness maker’s shop with parents.
In 1930 at 4 Guithavon Street with parents
When married, at 29 Avenue Road for the rest of her life.
Except spent five years during Second World War from July 1939, in New Zealand, because were there for six month holiday when war broke out.

Relatives
Parents stayed at the saddler’s shop till after the Second World War.
Uncle was Mr Glover who had the cycle / motor shop at 38 Collingwood Road. Three Glovers men married three Brewsters.

School
Miss Bird’s private school in Newland Street till about eight, then to the National School in Guithavon Street.

Work
No regular work – helped at home.
First World War – drove baker’s delivery horse and cart for Ardley’s at 137 Newland Street. Wore trousers which caused some concern amongst the inhabitants.

Married
1930 or 1931 at Witham parish church, Harry Edward Baker, born c 1872. Son of the Baker who had Baker’s builders of Danbury and born in Danbury. He had been in Canada and Australia as a young man. and then spent 24 years in New Zealand as a builder. Died in 1954 aged 82.

Children
None.

Died
September 1991 aged 94.
