Re Irene she is not a relative (that I have found so far) but I have done some research for you : She was still alive in 2012/3 as she was on the electoral register then as “Witham”

Her father was born in Stebbing (grandmother [Elizabeth Byford]) and was in Witham as per 1911 census. In fact I previously traced some of parents family back but as  yet non linked to my family. I believe they are linked but can not prove – a number of Springetts all moved to Rivenhall in the 1860’s from somewhere (I think brothers but have not found link as yet) a bit of a coincidence.  If I find anything / find a distant relative of Irene on Ancestry I’ll let you know.

  1. I read with interest about Irene springett, I think she taught me in infant school in the 1950s, she was a lovely lady, very kind and gentle. I attended cressing primary school from 1954-1960.
If miss springett is still alive she must be a great age, if anyone has any information about her I would love to know. Regards Debby Byam

    1. Hello Debby. I did send you a reply about Miss Springett, not sure where it is, maybe went by email. But anyway, now we’ve heard from Philip Cardy who seems to know her well, perhaps you might be able to arrange with him how you might best meet her if that is what you would like to do. All the best, Janet.

  2. Irene is still alive and recently celebrated her 102nd birthday. She is still active and regularly attends worship at Witham United Reform Church (formerly Congregational Church) where she has been a member for nearly 80 years. On her 100th birthday she received a congratulatory message from the present staff and children of Cressing Primary school. A wonderful lady who is loved by us all.

    1. Dear Phillip
I don’t know if you’ve heard that Irene passed away on August 22 this year.
She died in Broomfield Hospital and I am happy to say that I was with her when she passed, very peacefully. She was as you know the most amazing lady. What I find hard is that people who never really knew her just saw her as a very old lady. In her own words, she would say “People don’t want to bother with you once you are old”. If only they had really known her, they would have seen her as one of the kindest most compassionate people they might ever have known. She truly loved her pupil’s, and her work during the war was amazing. She actually didn’t stop working in one way or another until her late 90s. She never complained, she had the most amazing memory for detail until she died. Her funeral at Witham United Reformed Church is on the 17th of September, I just hope that many people come to pay their last respects to this delightful lady.

  3. I am very happy to be able to say that Irene Springett is still very much in the here and now and has recently celebrated her 103rd Birthday. Her memory is as sharp as ever it was too.
Only today she was wondering whether she has any family still living in Silver End, If so, their name would be “Raven” from her mother’s side.
Irene is so very interested in Witham history, in fact, it can be quite an education having a conversation with her on this subject.

  4. Dear Debbie,
I have only just seen your post regarding Irene Springett, it was so lovely to read it too. Sadly, Irene passed away a couple of weeks ago on the 22nd August, very peacefully. She never changed, she was still as you described her, a beautiful, gentle soul. Her funeral will be held at Witham United Reformed Church on 17th September
